On Saturday 16th September, over 80 students, workers, and activists from across the country gathered for “Capital in a Day”: an event hosted by Socialist Appeal and the Marxist Student Federation to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Karl Marx’s Capital. The new and completed edition of Stalin, the critical biography Trotsky was working on at the time of his death, was officially launched last Saturday at the Museo Casa de León Trotsky (Leon Trotsky House Museum) in Mexico City by the IMT with presentations by Esteban Volkov, Trotsky’s grandson, and Alan Woods, the editor of the new edition of the book.
In the final week of July, nearly 300 delegates and visitors from around 30 different countries attended the 2016 World Congress of the International Marxist Tendency. Meeting in the midst of huge mass movements, class struggles, and revolutionary developments across the world, this year’s congress was undoubtedly the most exciting and successful yet.

Over the weekend of 8-10th April, over 120 Socialist Appeal supporters and sellers met in London to discuss the turbulent economic and political situation developing in Britain – and internationally – and to take stock of the tasks facing Marxists in the period ahead. Last week saw the 2015 World School of the International Marxist Tendency, with around 270 visitors attending the Italian-hosted event from over 30 different countries, coming from as far and wide as Canada, Venezuela, South Africa, Morocco, and Pakistan. The school was testament to the enthusiasm and strength of ideas within the IMT.

On Wednesday April 15th, over 50 people attended the premiere of the Telesur documentary “Hugo Chavez: a portrait from Europe”, co-organised by Hands off Venezuela and the Marxist Student Federation, with discussion following on the recent sanctions levied by American imperialism against the Bolivarian revolution.
As the General Election approaches, there is little enthusiasm amongst ordinary people for any of the main parties and the programme of austerity that they share. There was plenty of revolutionary enthusiasm on display, however, at this year’s conference of Socialist Appeal supporters, attended by around 140 comrades and hosted by the SOAS Marxist Society.
On Saturday 14th March, the 34th annual congress of The Struggle, the Pakistan section of the International Marxist tendency commenced its proceedings in Lahore. This was yet another milestone in the growth and development of the forces of Marxism in Pakistan.

Solidarity with the Anti-fascist Resistance in Ukraine (SARU) held a supporters’ meeting on the 11th of November at the Marx Memorial Library in Clerkenwell, London. A packed room heard a series of speakers discuss the current situation in Ukraine and the way forward for the campaign.
This October saw the 18th Edinburgh Independent and Radical Book Fair, hosted by Word Power Books, which offered an array of radical literature from over 70 publishers, along with a host of political events drawing large crowds. Wellred Books – the publishing house of the International Marxist Tendency – was present, attracting many people to our stall of Marxist classics.

Monday 2nd June saw the founding meeting of the ‘Solidarity with the Antifascist Resistance in Ukraine’ campaign, which was hosted by the Marxist Student Federation in SOAS, London. Over 150 people attended the meeting to discuss the need for a campaign in support of the antifascist resistance in Ukraine to provide a counterweight to the lies and distortions of the Western media.

This year’s annual conference of Socialist Appeal supporters and sellers saw another record turnout. Over the weekend of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th April, more than 120 Marxist activists convened in London to discuss the perspectives for revolution and the organisational tasks at hand for the Marxists in Britain.
The campaign for a fortnightly Socialist Appeal has received an excellent initial response. As you may be aware, due to the growing response this newspaper has had in the recent period, we have recognised that a monthly publication is no longer sufficient. The depth of the crisis demands a more regular Marxist analysis that closely follows the workers’ movement as it develops, putting forward a clear socialist programme.
The time has come for us to take a step forward. For twenty years Socialist Appeal has maintained itself as a permanent, monthly fixture in the labour movement, providing a Marxist, class-based analysis of events in Britain and internationally. From 2015, however, Socialist Appeal will be a fortnightly paper. Over the next 12 months, we will be preparing ourselves for this transition. We ask all our readers to support the Forward to a Fortnightly campaign.
It’s been a revolutionary year internationally and a successful year for the Marxists in Britain. Jhon Guerra from the Venezuelan embassy in the UK and Jorge Martín from the Hands Off Venezuela campaign addressed a meeting in London, hosted by the Marxist Student Federation, to discuss the forthcoming municipal elections and the on-going economic war against the Bolivarian revolution.
From 15th-17th November the International Marxist Tendency held the IMT Winter School 2013, hosted by UCLU Marxist Society. Over 130 attendees from across the country and the rest of northern Europe – and even the USA! – descended on UCL for the weekend to discuss why ‘Marx Was Right’ and debate the relevance of Marxism today.

To open the new academic year, the University of London Union Marxist Society is hosting a debate between Alan Woods – editor of www.marxist.com and author of “Bolshevism: the Road to Revolution” – and Orlando Figes – Professor of History at Birkbeck University and author of “A People’s Tragedy” – on the true nature of the Russian Revolution. Come along on Thursday 10th October to hear both sides in what promises to be a fantastic discussion.
We publish here a report from the recent World School of the International Marxist Tendency, held in Greece, written by a Socialist Appeal comrade who was attending such an international Marxist event for the first time. The report gives a vivid description of the quality of the political discussions at the event, as well as of the enthusiasm with which the Marxists are fighting for socialist ideas across the world.
On Tuesday 09th of July Socialist Appeal and the SOAS Marxist Society hosted a discussion at SOAS to analyse and discuss the current revolutionary situation in Egypt and, more broadly, in the Middle East. Jorge Martin and Hamid Alizadeh from the International Marxist Tendency opened the meeting to a crowd of around 40 attendees. Diego Macias of the SOAS Marxist Society reports on the discussion and the views put forward by the Marxists in relation to the important revolutionary events in Egypt.
From 28-30 June, Socialist Appeal, in conjunction with the UCLU Marxist Society, hosted the 3rd Marxist Summer School, with over 100 attending during the course of the weekend. The aim of the school was to discuss the key contributions to Marxist theory made by Ted Grant, the leading Marxist theoretician and activist since the death of Trotsky, and founder of the Militant Tendency and Socialist Appeal.
This weekend, from 28th to 30th June, Socialist Appeal and the UCLU Marxist Society are hosting the third annual Marxist Summer School. We invite our readers to join us in UCL, London, for what promises to be a fantastic weekend of discussions exploring the ideas of Marxism and the ways in which we can fight back against the attacks of a capitalist system in crisis.
On Tuesday 11th June, Socialist Appeal and the Marxist Societies of SOAS and UCL organised a meeting at SOAS (the School of Oriental and African Studies), London, to discuss the current political situation and mass movement in Turkey. This followed on from the daily protests that were held in Trafalgar Square over the past week to show support for the Turkish demonstrators.
On Saturday 8th of June, a rally was organised in Trafalgar Square by the Turkish community of London in solidarity with the revolutionary process that is currently taking place in Turkey. This was part of a series of smaller rallies that were called every day this past week. Comrades from Socialist Appeal have participated throughout the week.
The magnificent movement of the workers and youth of Turkey is an inspiration to the whole world. It has turned into a tidal wave of mass protests against the vicious and reactionary Erdogan regime, and has acquired insurrectionary dimensions.Alan Woods, Marxist author, editor of www.marxist.com, and leading member of the International Marxist Tendency, will speak on the tremendous mass movement in Turkey at a meeting in London on Tuesday 11th June.
On Tuesday 4th June, around 1000 people rallied in Trafalgur Square, London, in solidarity with the movement in Turkey. The majority were from London’s huge Turkish community, with hundreds of Turkish youth present. They gave the protest an explicitly Communist and revolutionary message, with hundreds of red flags and revolutionary chanting.

Over 50 activists, trade unionists, youth and Latin American activists, met in London on 4th May to discuss about the legacy of Hugo Chávez and the challenges facing the Bolivarian revolution. The meeting reaffirmed our rejection of the opposition claims of electoral fraud and renewed our commitment to defend the democratically expressed will of the Venezuelan people to elect Nicolás Maduro as president.
We are proud to announce the launch of the new biography of Ted Grant, entitled “Ted Grant: the Permanent Revolutionary”. Alan Woods, the author of the book, will be publically launching the book at a meeting on May Day – Wednesday 1st May – hosted by the UCLU Marxist Society in London.
On Thursday 11th April, a packed Socialist Appeal meeting at University College London saw miners’ leaders and trade unionists recall the brutality of Thatcher and the bitter lessons etched into their consciousness. The speeches from John Dunn, of the Justice for Minerworkers campaign, and Chris Herriot – an ex-miner from Scotland – demonstrated the anger that exists across the country towards Thatcherism and the passion to fight for a socialist alternative.
There was a record participation of 110 attendees at Socialist Appeal sellers’ annual conference over the weekend of 6th and 7th April. The increased quantity was also expressed in a higher quality than ever before. Never has Marxism been as relevant and potentially powerfully as today, and never before have the ranks of the Marxists been as confident and optimistic.
The huge response from ordinary people to the death of Hugo Chavez has highlighted the massive impact that the Venezuelan Revolution has had on millions of people worldwide. Never has the Venezuelan Revolution been more relevant than today. This explains why over 70 people came to see Alan Woods – editor of www.marxist.com and founder of the Hands Off Venezuela campaign – speak on the legacy of Chavez and the tasks of the Venezuelan Revolution now that its leader has passed away.
8th March every year is International Women’s Day – a celebration of the important role played by women in the class struggle throughout history. To mark this day, we would like to highlight several articles that may be interest to readers regarding the question of women and the class struggle.
Between 15th-17th February, supporters of the International Marxist Tendency from Britain, Denmark, Sweden, and Austria met for the annual Marxist Winter School, this year hosted by the UCLU Marxist Society in London, and the event proved to be a great success.
Over the weekend of the 26th and 27th of January, Socialist Appeal supporters from Scotland and the North of England came together in Newcastle University Students’ Union to discuss the fundamental ideas of Marxism. This was the second annual Marxist Weekend School to be held in Newcastle and provided all those who attended with an opportunity to take part in extensive discussions on a variety of topics.
