Last Saturday was the 140th annual Durham Miners gala. This year was marked by a visible lack of political direction or ideas. Nevertheless, union members have been taking individual initiatives and the RCP in the North-East had our largest ever fringe meeting.
Tomorrow is the Durham Miners’ Gala, the largest trade union event in Europe. The annual gala however has become a talking shop for leaders of the left and trade unions. What we really need is not just talk, but real action!

Members of the RCP Central Committee travelled across the country to discuss the rise and decline of US imperialism, the failures of popular frontism and its politics today, and to look forwards to even more inspiring initiatives to reach the most radical youth.
‘I attended an anti-racist counter-demonstration last Saturday, by myself. All I had on me was The Communist and some leaflets. But I was able to stand out from the moralism of the main organisers, and won over a group of young people to communist ideas.’
In Birmingham, workers and youth outnumbered Britain First five-to-one. But this victory came in spite of the left’s leadership. Meanwhile, anti-racists successfully disrupted Tommy Robinson’s Oxford Union appearance. In both places, the Communists took bold initiatives.
Workers, youth, and anti-racists came out in force last weekend, humiliating the small groups that the far right mustered. But these victories were won despite the weak politics and methods of Stand Up to Racism. The RCP is showing the way forward.
