Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson once remarked that a week is a long time in politics. Lenin put it similarly when he wrote that: “There are decades where nothing happens, and weeks where decades happen.”
The last few weeks in Britain, and internationally, have felt like a decade in terms of the pace of events. The period we have entered is marked by instability and crisis; by sharp twists and turns. The sudden – albeit belated – resignation of Boris Johnson is a reflection of this.
Elsewhere in the world, such as Sri Lanka, this same process has been reflected in seismic movements of the masses, as ordinary people fight to defend themselves against collapsing living standards.
Increasingly, workers and youth across the world are pointing the finger not just at this or that government, but at the whole bankrupt system.
It is clear that we have entered an epoch of war and revolution. What is missing, however, is a revolutionary leadership capable of channelling these struggles towards the overthrow of capitalism.
To build such a leadership, we need to arm ourselves with the necessary ideas. To change the world, we must first understand it. As Lenin noted, “without revolutionary theory, there can be no revolutionary movement”.
There has never been a more urgent task. Explosive events are taking place all around us. We must educate ourselves and get organised.
This is the purpose of the International Marxist University: a four-day event, hosted by the International Marxist Tendency, which begins in just one week’s time.

#IMU2022 will deliver the highest level of Marxist theory on offer internationally, with contributions and analysis from comrades active in struggles all over the world.
We will hear from comrades in Latin America about the mass movements in Ecuador, Colombia, and Chile. Comrades in Russia will discuss their fight against the Putin regime and the war in Ukraine. And comrades in Pakistan will talk about the turbulent political events rocking the whole Indian subcontinent.
Nowhere else will you find such internationalism on display; such a thorough explanation of the revolutionary events occurring across the world; and such a profound depth of Marxist ideas and theory on offer – on topics from art and science, to philosophy and economics.
