Today several hundred PCS strikers left their picket lines to join a lunchtime march through the capital city to show the workers of London that the members are angry and won’t take no for a answer. An estimated 5,000 people marched through the streets of Islington last Saturday with one intention: To ‘Save Our Whittington’ from plans to close the Accident and Emergency department and maternity ward at the Archway hospital.
Students at the London College of
Communication occupied the main lecture hall as part of a campaign to
oppose planned cutbacks.The action started on Monday night and
continued untill Wednesday afternoon. The decision to occupy was taken after a meeting on 9th
of November where management refused to compromise on a “restructuring” plan
that will involve course closers and staff redundancies, which have already amounted to over 150.
Over the last few months we have posted reports on strike actions involving bus workers in Northumberland, Doncaster, Manchester and Essex. Now action has arrived in the capital city itself. Bus workers in East London are out today in a dispute over wages and conditions – and the red flags are flying in Romford!
In Will Hay’s classic farce ‘Oh, Mr Porter!’ the new stationmaster arrives to
be greeted at Buggleskelly ticket office with the words “Next train gone.” For thousands
of travelers on the modern day farce of London Midland network last Sunday it was a case of “No
trains coming.”
Postal workers in London are set to take strike action over the next three days.The Delivery Offices
are out on the 8th July, the Drivers (Distribution) are out on the
9th and the Mail Centres are out on the 10th July.
A
second lively picket against the coup in Honduras took place in London
on July 3rd. Members of the Latin American community, solidarity and
left wing activists gathered outside the embassy to demand the
reinstatement of president Zelaya
The issue behind the ballot was cuts. The last time our union took
industrial action was in 2007. When we went back there were 4 phases to
the agreement that was signed. Phases 1 and 2 have gone through. Phase
3 is currently being implemented and is being met with stiff
resistance. If a worker doesn’t turn up for work unforeseen, the others
have to cover their duty – and we don’t get paid for it!
