The riots which started in the Tottenham area of North London on
Saturday night and which have since spread to many others parts of the
capital have exposed the social decay within the city as we enter the
final year before the start of the prestige Olympics.
JUNE 30th: Thousands march in London against the Tory attacks on public sector pensions.
On Wednesday 22nd June, 700 activists
gathered in Friends’ Meeting House, London, in opposition to the cuts
and to build for the June 30th strike. Under the banner of "Unite the
Resistance," activists from trade unions, student groups and others
gathered to discuss the cuts. The rally was a great success and shows
the depth of anger against the cuts and austerity.
This
year’s national sellers conference of ‘Socialist Appeal’ was held in London on the
weekend of April 16th and 17th. Supporters from all over Britain, from Aberdeen
to Torbay, came together against the backdrop of a year of class struggle and
revolution in Britain and internationally. Without doubt, the conference marked
a new period in the development of the Marxist voice.
On March 3rd the University of London
Union Marxists will play host to a very special meeting on the
revolutionary events unfolding in the Arab world. Speakers include:
Houzan Mahmoud, the representative of the Organisations of Women’s
Freedom in Iraq and a member of the Worker-Communist Party of Iraq;
Serge Goulart, co-ordinator of the Occupied Factory movement in Brazil;
and Alan Woods, secretary of the International Marxist Tendency.
Thousands gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square on Saturday (12th
February) to celebrate the departure of the hated, now former
president, Hosni Mubarak. The gathering was actually called as a
demonstration against the regime and to demand the resignation of
Mubarak. However, events have moved at such a rate that the despot had
tendered his resignation the day the before. Therefore, the event was
now a party in the centre of London to concur with the one in Tahrir
Square.
On Saturday (5th February) around one
thousand people – Egyptians, Londoners and others ‑ gathered outside the
United States embassy and later marched through central London to the
Egyptian embassy. The protest was called to show solidarity with the
revolutionary struggle of the people of Egypt.

Thousands of workers and youth braved the freezing cold to march through the centre of London today (Sat 29th Jan) to protest against the cuts. Cameron and Clegg may have hoped that, now the votes on tuition fees have been voted on, things would quiet down. They were wrong.

Around noon on Thursday 9th December, students
gathered in various parts of London to march towards the centre of the
city. All over London the students had made a conscious effort to bring
out school students in the morning and the days before with leaflets. At
least half of the protesters were school students probably more. Many
were working class kids from poor areas. Even The Financial Times admitted that some 20-30,000 students participated.
Yestersday’s NUS/UCU demo in London against attacks on further education
attracted over 50,000 mainly students, who came in their numbers from
all over the country. Many of these were young people demonstrating for
the first time ever. It will not be the last. As the attacks start to
bite, more and more youth will come into activity and draw the political
conclusions.
