The monster ‘Unite the Kingdom’ demonstration on Saturday 13 September marks a turning point. This was an embarrassing defeat for the left. The blame lies at the feet of the reformist left leaders, and the so-called ‘Marxist’ Socialist Workers Party.

On this day in 1977, the fascist National Front marched through Lewisham, protected by thousands of police. Local black youth, workers, and socialists mobilised to physically block the fascists. Here, Alex Gassem draws a balance sheet of these events.
