Report: Winds of change felt in Edinburgh East
The mood was not of anger, nor even
that of resentment, but of militancy towards those who were placed in
their positions to represent us, the workers.

In the aftermath of the revelations presented by the Hillsborough Independent Panel (read report here ) we publish here the thoughts of a Liverpool supporter Mike Jones who speaks for many in the city of Liverpool about the reaction to what the report findings have now officially confirmed.
After a long fight lasting 23 years, the families and
friends of the 96 football supporters killed at the Hillsborough stadium in
Sheffield on the afternoon of Saturday April 15 1989 have finally had official
confirmation of what really happened that day. For 23 years they have had to
fight alone against a torrent of lies, mistruths and a cover-up involving the
police and others. Now a report
published by the independent commission established by the last Labour
government has made available the real damming evidence of the blunders on the
day and all the lies that followed
The picture of the Chinese economy painted by commentators in the West is often one of strength; an economy dominated by exports, with unstoppable growth and development; in short, a model to emulate. Recent figures released by the International Monetary Fund, however, describe a very different situation; a situation where contradictions are intensifying below the surface; a situation that is pregnant with crisis and revolutionary consequences.
Councillors Don Thomas and Keith Morrell have been suspended for four
months from the Southampton Council ruling Labour Group. Their crime was
voting against the Group’s proposal to close a well supported swimming
pool in their area of Southampton to save about £250,000
A number of unions are organising transport to the October 20 demo in
London. Here are the latest details – we will update these as we go but
the responsibilty for the correctness of this data lies with those who
provided it.
As international students consider
their options in the wake of the London Met fiasco, other institutions
are licking their lips. With fees for international students even higher
than the £9,000 that British students (not including Scottish students)
pay many universities are keen to herd as many students as possible
into their courses.
We will deal with the tendency of the rate of profit to fall in a future article, but for now it is sufficient to observe that the views expressed in Anti-Dühring represent the standpoint of both Marx and Engels, which, despite all the efforts of the revisionists to misrepresent them, was identical.
Less than a week after the shocking
news that the government will try to deport up to 3,000 international
students from London Metropolitan University, students and staff issued a
powerful note of defiance. Around 500 from London Met and elsewhere
held a militant protest outside the Home Office on Wednesday 5th
September, launching the beginning of a campaign to overturn that
disgraceful decision. Slogans called for the disbandment of the UK
Border Authority (UKBA) and for Theresa May to resign.
The persecution of Julian Assange
represents an all-out assault on democratic rights. For what “crime” is
this man being persecuted? The Swedish authorities are trying to get him
extradited on a trumped up “rape” case that has long been exposed as
fraudulent. No serious person will believe for a single moment that this
is the real reason for the witch-hunting of the founder of Wikileaks.
On the 24th August 2012
Samsung was ordered by a court in San Jose, California to pay Apple just
over $1 billion in damages for patent infringement. Apple is now
seeking to ban the sale of certain Samsung products in the USA and a
hearing is scheduled for 20th September for that claim. This
long-running dispute between these technology giants over infringement
of smart phone patents shines a spotlight on the failings of a decaying
capitalist system.
Everywhere we see workers and young
people beginning to move against the capitalist crisis. In the past year
we have seen revolutions throughout the Arab world; uprising and
countless general strikes in Greece; the movement of the Indignados in
Spain and now the movement of the Spanish miners. Last autumn we saw in
New York city – the belly of the beast – the Occupy movement begin,
quickly spreading to cities throughout the world and proclaiming: “we
are the 99%”.
