The Marxist Student Federation (MSF) has kicked off the academic year by signing up thousands of new students to Marxist societies around the country. Anti-austerity protests and Jeremy Corbyn’s inspiring victory in the Labour leadership contest has radicalised a whole layer of students and youth, who are now looking for an organisation that is ready to fight for something better.
The American imperialists and their “allies” in NATO now find themselves in an impossible situation in the Middle East. One particular intervention stands out: that of an unnamed serving general in the British Army, who has openly stated that the could be a coup d’état if Corbyn became prime minister.
As part of their programme of austerity and their attacks on the NHS, the Tory government is imposing a new contract on junior doctors. But doctors won’t lie down and take these cuts without a fight.
Since last week when Russia began bombing targets inside Syria, Western media has been overflowing with articles about the crimes of Russian imperialism in Syria. But, as Hamid Alizadeh explains, the idea put forward that “moderate” rebels are being bombed by ruthless Russians raises more questions than it answers.

This week, for the first time in ten years, Vladimir Putin attended the UN general assembly, followed by a closed door meeting with Barack Obama. Only one month ago such a meeting would have seemed highly unlikely. The significant increase of a Russian military presence in Syria over the past month has changed the situation.

In the evening on Monday 28th September, around 5,000 junior doctors and their sympathisers gathered in Westminster for a semi-spontaneous protest against the attacks on their pay and conditions, and against the attempts by the Tories to slash the NHS and open the door to privatisation. With a hugely increased turnout of 77% (10 points more than in 2012), the Catalan elections gave an overall majority of seats to pro-independence parties. However, these parties did not get an overall majority of votes. The results showed the strength of the pro-independence feeling.
