Socialist Appeal is pleased to announce the publication of the first in the new series run of our journal of Marxist theory, the Marxist International Review .
We intend to publish an edition at least twice a year. Each issue will concentrate either wholly or largely on one theme or subject. As it is explained in the introduction, the main aim of the MIR is to ‘delve deeper into theory and the dialectical world outlook.’ As such it seems appropriate to start with an edition devoted to the birth of ideas itself. The development of human thought is at the heart of an understanding of the Marxist method and it is that method we intend to defend. The main part of the Summer 2008 issue comprises the first two chapters of Alan Woods’ unpublished book on the history of philosophy. This text was originally intended to serve as the opening section of Reason In Revolt, co-written with Ted Grant. However, given that this would have pushed the book several hundred pages over its agreed size, it had to be removed at a late stage and replaced with a short summary. Thirteen years later, this material is finally available in printed form. Also included is Leon Trotsky’s short but ever relevant article, Against the stream.
