From the 4th – 7th October, the Conservative Party will be holding their annual conference in Manchester. On Sunday 4th October, tens of thousands of workers and youth will descend onto the streets as part of a protest against austerity, organised by the TUC and the People’s Assembly. Join the Marxist Student Federation to march against the Tories and austerity!
From the 4th – 7th October, the Conservative Party will be holding their annual conference in Manchester. When they did this two years ago, over 50,000 people went to the streets to show their disgust at the Conservative Party presence in the city and their opposition to the programme of austerity that the Tories have inflicted on workers, the youth, and the poor during their time in power.
This year’s demonstration, part of a week of action called by the People’s Assembly, is set to be even bigger than two years ago. With the Tories now in their second term, and with attacks on the most vulnerable increasing, it is crucial to organise and demonstrate our opposition to this.
Furthermore, the movement against austerity has now been bolstered by the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader, with around 70,000 signing up to the Labour Party in the past few weeks in order to join the growing opposition to the Tories and their programme of cuts. With the new Labour leadership committing themselves to support protest and strike action, workers and youth will now feel emboldened to fight back and take on the Tory government.
Students were once again some of the first to be attacked by the new majority Conservative government. The scrapping of maintenance grants; the scope for high performing institutions to hike tuition fees in line with inflation; the scrapping of housing benefit for 18-21 year old’s: these are only some of the new policies the Tories are introducing that specifically attack young people.
The Marxist Student Federation will be showing our opposition to this by marching together on Sunday 4th October through Manchester city centre with the TUC and the People’s Assembly Against Austerity. We will be marching with a clear message: there is no alternative to austerity under capitalism; attacks on the working class will just continue as long as capitalism continues. We need to fight for a socialist alternative!
