On Thursday, 22 October, the ULU Marxist
Society met in the University
of London Union to
discuss socialism with prominent left-wing Labour MP John McDonnell. 30 or so
people had turned up to listen to what John McDonnell had to say about why they
should be socialists.
After a brief introduction by the MP, the
members of the society had the chance to ask questions. The attendees wanted to
know if John McDonnell, who attempted to stand against Gordon Brown in June
2007, would run again if another election would come.
John McDonnell replied that the key
question was policies, not personalities, but if a policy change required a
personality change, he would put himself forward again. Other questions centred
around if socialist policies were electorally viable. After the questions were
answered, the chair announced that the Marxist society would help campaign for
John McDonnell’s re-election as an MP in the upcoming parliamentary election.
