For the second year running the Hands Off Venezuela campaign
and Socialist Appeal made an intervention at the University of Glasgow
Fresher’s Fair. Through the course of the three day fair four supporters of HOV
and Socialist Appeal manned a stall selling various pieces of material
including the Hands Off Venezuela magazine and Socialist Appeal journal.
Hundreds of flyers for the Hands Off Venezuela campaign were distributed and
over fifty names were registered as showing interest in setting up a Hands Off
Venezuela society at the university.

A number of students showed an interest in socialist ideas
and the revolutionary process in Venezuela and were glad to see that there was
an active solidarity campaign. The intervention offered a good opportunity to
discredit many of the myths about socialism and in particular the lies about
the Venezuelan revolution that are spread by the right wing media. Many
students came to the stall with questions about events in Venezuela keen for
access to an alternative perspective sympathetic to the revolution.
This gives HOV a solid grounding for future activity
in Glasgow. We aim to register a society when this becomes available in
October. Our first meeting is on the 30th September at Partick Burgh
Halls on Burgh Halls street.. We will be discussing the recent moves towards a
coup in Bolivia and Venezuela as well as HOV activity over the next year.
