On Wednesday March 2nd students from different schools in Glasgow met
at the Centre of Contemporary Arts to officially launch the Glasgow
School Student Union (GSSU).
Discussed were the political aims of the union and it’s structure,
and what activity the union should conduct. The Glasgow School Student
Union resolved to build for a presence on the March 26th demonstration
in London, which promises to be a huge protest against the governments
cuts and austerity, called by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
The union also voted as the meeting came to a close to support the
call For a National Schoool Student Union, and attempt to build it,
supporting the idea of sending delegates to a first national meeting in
the April Easter break.
A message of support was sent from Hugh Donnelly, chair of the Educational Institute of Scotland:
"The attack on schools and young people is one thing which
concerns us as is the attack on teachers themselves. However, as you
suggest, it is the younger generation who are most at risk due to the
threat of unemployment, low wages, and the threats to both further and
higher education.
Cuts of this kind surpass those cuts we witnessed in the 80′s under Thatcher and anything seen in most people’s lifetimes.
I should like to wish you every success in your project and that you keep us informed of any developments in the near future.
Hugh Donnelly"
The union had this to say:
"Glasgow Schools Student Union would like to
thank all those who attended our Launch Meeting on the 2nd of March, it
was a very successful meeting, which left us with a clear direction
over the next month – preparing for ‘the March for the Better Way’ in London on Saturday the 26th of March.
"Our objective over the next month is to build for the TUC march in London. It is our firm belief that Glasgow Schools Student Union
should have as much representation as possible at the march. To this
end, we have been in touch with Trade Unions in an attempt to provide free buses and/or trains for School Students in Glasgow."
Militant Student adds its voice to the call of the GSSU.
Build for March 26th! Fill the streets of London with a collective show of strength by the working class!
Build the National School Student Union, in united action with the university students and the labour movement!
