Not too late to take part in the second non-event of the year, following on from the Royal Wedding of last week. Yes it is referendum day where we get to choose how we elect our MPs.
Last week we got to see a load of rich toffs, army twits, clerical buffoons, assorted representatives from muderous regimes, dodgy celebs and other unaccountable types – all dressed like extras from Pirates of the Carribean – swanning around as if they really mattered. Most people, especially from the working class areas, stayed in bed. Maybe this had to do with the fact that, facing cuts in jobs and services, people were a bit annoyed at having to pay for a £20 million pound binge.
Now we have another waste of time. The vote over whether to go to an AV system or not is about one thing: how to make it look as if our MPs have majority support when they set about cutting jobs, freezing wages, raising VAT and bombing a different country each month. The AV system is meant to create this illussion by transfering the votes from people who voted for fringe candidates to the actual winner who can claim 50% plus 1 support even if many of those votes were from people who never wanted this person elected. So someone who voted for the Monster Raving Looney Party will end up, in effect, with several votes whereas Labour voters will, in most cases, still just have the one. It has been said that Labour voters in areas where the party usually does badly can under AV put say the Lib-Dems as a second choice to keep the Tories out. However, we have all seen the real face of the Lib-Dems over the last period, so no point in given them anything other than a good kicking at the polls.
Reject AV – it is just a scam. Needless to say the people who hold real power in capitalist Britain – the bosses and bankers in the City of London – remain outside of any democratic control or accountability to anyone other than their own class. This is the reality of parliamentary democracy under capitalism – a system which is intended to convince us that we run things whereas in fact real power lies elsewhere. If you want real democracy and power then fight for socialism.
