Those of us watching the political developments in the wake of the
election have seen a kaleidoscope of people passing by – Brown,
Cameron, Clegg and all their understrappers have all been very busy.
They all have one thing in common. They are interested in politics. But
at this crucial time their attention has been concentrated on an
unusual figure – the Queen.  She’s unusual because she’s not interested
in politics at all. Her favourite paper is the ‘Racing Post’ and her
major interest is in horse racing

Cameron and Clegg’s Big Society

In
1987, Margaret Thatcher, the Conservative Prime Minister, declared in an
interview that, “there is no such thing as society.” It is therefore fairly ironic that 13 years later,
David Cameron, the new Conservative Prime Minister, has announced his plans to
create a ‘Big Society’ in Britain. Throughout the general election coverage,
Cameron had avoided mentioning any specifics on what was meant by his vision of
a Big Society, but now Cameron and his new best friend Nick Clegg, have
outlined what is in store for the country.

Flotilla massacre exposes criminal blockade of Gaza

In the middle of the night of the 31st of May, 64 km off the coast,
Israeli commandos rappelled down from helicopters onto the 6 ship
flotilla. Activists say they boarded the ships firing. The Israeli
government decided to use deadly force to maintain their blockade of
the Gaza strip, provoking waves of protest. These events have exposed
the policy of Israeli imperialism to the masses everywhere: Gaza is a
ghetto, kept in starvation conditions, and no one may interfere. This
will have effects across the world, even in Israel itself.

Editorial: Ruling class prepares for confrontation

Britain is heading for a showdown. The British establishment is taking
stock of the situation. They are fully aware of the social crisis that
is unfolding. The illusions of class harmony have evaporated. They
consider that it is time that the working class learned its lesson that
capitalism cannot afford any reforms. Counter-reforms are on the order
of the day. The workers are therefore being sent to the school of the
coalition government whose programme is “red in tooth and claw”
austerity.

1972 Miners’ Strike: Tories Thrashed

After the Second World War the advanced capitalist world went through a prolonged period of boom, rising working class living standards and relative class peace. By 1970 it was clear that the boom was coming to an end. The ruling class saw the need to confront the working class and drive down living standards in order to restore their profits. Their chosen instrument in Britain was the Tory government under Heath, elected in 1970.

A new stage in the crisis of capitalism (part one)

After talk of the so called "credit crunch" gave way to optimistic
comments about the "green shoots" in the economy, events in Greece
caught the bourgeois commentators unaware. Now the world economy has
once again been plunged into chaos and uncertainty as the governments
of Europe try to contain the fall-out from the near-default of Greece
and it is the workers who will be presented with the bill.
