UPDATED HOV National Conference 2011 and anti-Uribe picket

On 21st May the 2011 National Conference of Hands Off Venezuela in
Britain will be taking place in London. Free to members, or join on the
day, and hear speakers coming from Venezuela as well as debate and wider
discussion in solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution. After the conference we will be joining a picket against the visit of Alvaro Uribe (the former
Colombian president) who is here to speak at a meeting of "investors" looking to make a quick buck at the expense of working people.

Alfie Meadows, student victimisation and the state

It can only be an accident of history
that last month’s Royal wedding took place on the anniversary of the
marriage of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun. That the Metropolitan police
carried out a number of raids, charging several students with criminal
offences in the same week, is no coincidence. Cover for the police was
provided by the media circus surrounding the wedding. On the other hand
it is clear that the state had been biding its time, waiting for the
distraction of the exam period. The most prominent and outrageous act on
the part of the police was the charging of Alfie Meadows with violent
disorder.

Scottish parliamentary elections: Why Labour failed to pose an alternative to the SNP

On Thursday history was made as the
Scottish National Party, who only a decade ago seemed destined to play
second fiddle to the Labour Party in Scottish politics, became the first
party in the Scottish Parliament’s twelve year history to form a single
party majority. More importantly, for the first time there is a
pro-independence majority in the Parliament, and consequently a
referendum on whether Scotland should leave the United Kingdom will be
held within the next five year term.

British local elections: important lessons for the left

Elections are simply a snapshot of the
mood at any particular moment in time, but they can reveal a lot about
the real underlying processes taking place in society. That was the case
with the May local elections, which marked the first anniversary in
power of the Coalition government and from which we can draw important
lessons.

Nine Days In May

This month marks the 85th anniversary of the General Strike of 1926.
This strike, the most epic struggle of the British working class to
date, arose from the deep crisis of British capitalism, reflected most
sharply in the mining industry. As today, the working class were asked
to pay for the   crisis. This led to the 1926 General Strike. Political
editor Rob Sewell looks back at the lessons of the nine days in May.

Support the teachers in their struggle! For a National School Student Union!

The National Union of Teachers (NUT),
the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) and the National
Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) are balloting their members for
strike action. It is likely that as a result of this we will see
sometime in June or July strikes of teachers up and down the country.
For school students this raises the question of what the response should
be.

Buck house cleaners demand a living wage

While the Great and Good were busy spending our
money on the Royal Wedding, low-paid cleaners at Buckingham Palace were
fighting to increase their meagre wages to something like a decent level. Sign
the petition in their support.
