In an effort to outflank the Tories and whip up xenophobia, Starmer is threatening to continue the government’s deportation policies and anti-migrant attacks. This is only adding to the anger against Labour. We say: the real enemy is in Westminster!

The latest national and sectoral conferences of Unison, Britain’s major public sector union, took place last week, in the context of an imminent Labour government. The widening gulf between the union leadership and membership was evident throughout.
In their campaigning, Starmer’s Labour are promoting themselves as being both “pro-worker” and “pro-business”. And unfortunately, many union leaders buy into this nonsense. Instead, the movement must militantly struggle for clear class demands.
Junior doctors in England will return to the picket lines again tomorrow, continuing their long-running struggle over pay. Starmer’s Labour will not save the NHS. Only militant action and socialist policies can win for health workers and patients.
Whistleblower Julian Assange is finally able to walk free today, having faced over a decade of repression and incarceration by US imperialism and its allies. But the real criminals – the warmongers in Washington and Westminster – are still at large.
Unite has announced indefinite strike action at Port Talbot. Other steel unions must follow this lead – downing tools in unison, and organising to spread the struggle. Above all, the labour movement must demand nationalisation, without compensation.
With the Tories hated and Starmer’s Labour mistrusted, many on the left are considering voting for the Green Party in this election. But the Greens’ own programme and record are dubious. Workers and youth should fight for a communist alternative.
