Over the last few weeks, comrades of the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP) have met thousands of students bursting with revolutionary energy and class anger, desperately looking for a way to fight for their future.
Before our first freshers interventions, we predicted our biggest obstacle to getting people organised would be pessimism – and understandably so. Young people feel like the world is hurtling towards disaster and that, given the impotent state of the left, nothing can be done to stop it.
We figured the only way we’d be able to combat this is with revolutionary optimism, which goes hand in hand with Marxist theory. The response to our slogan, ‘Demand the impossible!’, has shown that we were right to make this call.

Our comrades have now intervened at 52 universities, and met over two thousand students interested in getting involved with the Revolutionary Communist Students. At the time of writing, we have already recruited 100 new party members!
Report after report reveals the same common characteristics among those looking to get organised: an anger at how the world is today, and a deep desire to do something to change it.
This is why our revolutionary optimism has really connected – we believe we can change the world.

At Imperial College London, a PhD student said that, while her coursemates were pushing straight into careers in defence, the communists were the only people on campus who gave her a sense of hope that another option existed.
A student who decided to join in Norwich said she already feels the fight for revolution is “more important than my master’s degree”.
In Newcastle, someone who stopped when we were advertising our meeting, ‘How students can fight for a future’, said she desperately wanted to share in this hope and be inspired – something no other political group offers.

Our optimism is based upon reality: the radicalisation we can see among young people all over the world; in the Gen Z revolutions that are spreading from Asia and Africa to Europe, and which demonstrate the potential for a new world.
The one thing that we believe is lacking is a revolutionary party that can lead these heroic struggles to victory.
Revolutionary optimists
This desire to get organised, to understand the huge events already taking place all around us and prepare for those to come, was present all over the country.
Many of our stalls on campus were swarmed with students. In Cardiff, our comrades reported “we were constantly answering what the RCP is, what revolution is, what communism is – and how to join!”

In Liverpool and Bristol, several students made a straight beeline for the RCS’s stall, saying they had been looking specifically for us. One walked away telling their friend excitedly, “I just joined the revolution!”
When these students have been asked, ‘What makes you think we need a revolution?’, the response has most often been: ‘Everything!’
These answers have been followed by wide-ranging discussions on Palestine, Iran, the economy, climate change, and AI. Most commonly, though, students have wanted to know simply about communism, the Gen Z revolutions, and how we can fight for a revolution here in Britain.

In Birmingham, one student bought a copy of The Communist and left her number with us. The next day, she came along to the pub where comrades were meeting to chat politics. When she was asked if she was a communist, she said, “of course!” and continued:
“Well, I have eyes and ears, don’t I? Look at everything around us! I bought this paper yesterday. I read through it last night and I thought wow. Here were people finally saying the things I’ve been thinking since I was 13.”
There is a real mood of anger amongst students today – and beneath this anger, a desperate desire for clarity; for an explanation of what is happening in the world, why, and how we can change it for the better.

Marxism offers us all of this and more. Being armed with these ideas is how we have become known as the only optimists on campus – and so it’s no wonder the literature behind this outlook, such as the Communist Manifesto, has been flying off our stalls.
Building the alternative
At the University of Edinburgh, comrades reported the atmosphere at their first meeting was like nothing they’ve ever experienced before.
At the end of the meeting, students were asking, “Where are the sign-up papers? I’m going to join”. Others who had just arrived in the city told us that the chance to join a party like ours was exactly what they hoped for when starting university.

Edinburgh is not isolated in this experience. This enthusiasm gives us a real opportunity to mobilise in the coming weeks – and find even more young people looking for an organisation where they can genuinely fight for their future.
On 10 October, there will be a major Palestine solidarity demonstration in London, marking three years since the start of the genocide in Gaza. We are mobilising revolutionaries from across the country to come down and join the communist bloc.

We are on track to bring out a force of 700 communists. We will show the revolutionary alternative to these cynical gestures being made to appease the Palestine movement by Burnham’s Labour government.
We will be there on 10 October to say that ‘For Palestine to live, imperialism must die!’ – that instead of sowing illusions in Burnham and Miliband, we must bring down Labour’s government of war!
And this is only the beginning.

Following the demonstration, our comrade Fiona Lali will embark on a tour of campuses across Britain, speaking on how we must organise in the fight against racism. Keep an eye out if she’s coming to a campus near you!
From 13-15 November, we will be holding Revolution Festival 2026 in Central London. With 22 discussions on Marxist theory, current political events and culture, this will be an unmissable weekend for all communists across Britain.
And just a few days after that, we will be taking part in the national day of action against militarism, holding rallies to expose that – whether they are part of the Defence Universities Alliance or not – all these universities are keen to cosy up with the arms industry.

Demand the future
Today, there is more reason to be optimistic than ever. In recent weeks we have met thousands of people looking towards revolutionary ideas.
At the start of our campaign on campus, we were speaking with people about the inspiring Gen Z revolutions, and how events of this nature will come to Europe.
And already, we are seeing Europe set alight by mass, youth-led struggle.

Britain is not isolated from any of the conditions which have seen hundreds of thousands take to the streets against austerity, militarism, and landlordism in France, Germany, and Spain.
Young people in Britain today face all the same conditions: failing public services, warmongers in Westminster, sky-high rent, complete inaction in the face of the climate crisis – the list goes on.
If you are ready to demand the future, join the RCS today.
