The capitalist crisis has posed things in a point blank fashion. Austerity has hammered local government and public services across the board, and even worse is due to come with this April’s annual budget.
The Coalition is asking ordinary people to pay for a crisis they did not cause. To make matters worse, they are asking Labour councils to administer the medicine and implement these cuts.
But there are numerous of examples of Labour councillors taking a stand, defying the government, and refusing to carry out the cuts on their behalf, from the examples of Poplar in 1921 and Clay Cross in 1973, through to the militant struggles in Liverpool in the 1980s.
Now, with austerity once again being posed by the Tories, it is time for Labour councillors to stand firm and rally the labour movement in defence of jobs, welfare, and public services. Some councillors, such as those in Hull, have already begun this process – providing an inspiration for workers and youth across Britain.
Come along to hear John Dunn, former Clay Cross Labour councillor and miner, along with Gary Wareing, current Labour councillor, speak on the lessons from previous militant struggles against cuts and to discuss the need to continue that fight today.
