Why is it so ‘dangerous’ to be an MP?

Following Ann Widdecombe’s murder, establishment politicians have been up in arms about the supposed threat to MPs’ safety. Most recently, Farage has attacked Polanski for advocating violence. But we see through this hypocritical charade.

On 8 July Ann Widdecombe, former Conservative MP and Reform spokesperson, was murdered at her home in Devon.

Though the motives of the suspect are not yet known, this has not stopped the media speculating, with the worst of the rags blaming ‘left-wing extremism’ – and some even suggesting he was a communist.

Ann Widdecombe’s murder is not the only recent murder of a politician. In 2021, Tory MP David Amess was killed during a constituency surgery. A survey of over 500 MP staff found 78 percent had received threatening communication, with a third of MPs fearing for their safety.

The entire establishment has come out decrying Widdecombe’s murder, with Burnham calling for a “serious review” of MP security. Reform’s Zia Yusuf has even suggested introducing round-the-clock security for all 650 MPs, at the cost of an estimated £100 million a year to the taxpayer.

Nigel Farage in particular has been in uproar over Widdecombe’s murder – a welcome distraction from revelations of Farage’s scandalous £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency billionaire. He claims he’ll be next, after his government-provided security was downgraded.

“The government chose not to give Nigel the security that he needed,” loyally stated Farage’s fellow Reform MP Robert Jenrick. He continued, “We are not mainstream politicians. We are politicians who are fighting the establishment every single day. We’re not backing down.”

And this week, the sob story has continued, with Nigel Farage and his side-kick Zia Yusuf reporting Green Party leader Zack Polanski to the police, accused of advocating violence against Farage. What did Polanski do, you ask? He was tagged in a photo of someone wearing a satirical T-shirt on Instagram!

Someone fetch the world’s tiniest violin for these brave soldiers, please!

Let’s not forget that, at the same time as he’s been telling these sob stories about threats of violence to his person, Farage has been whipping up far-right violence and pogroms, actively calling for people to respond with “pure, cold rage” to “anti-white discrimination”.

‘Political violence’

In truth, none of these establishment politicians, from Burnham to Badenoch, are in the place to lecture us on ‘political violence’.

These are the same people who have quietly filed into the Houses of Parliament and voted time and again to support British imperialism, a force behind the deaths and misery of untold millions: from the genocide in Gaza, to the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Iran – to name just the most recent examples.

These same ladies and gentlemen have happily enriched themselves for years, taking more bribes and gifts than we will ever know of – not to mention upping their own wages to almost six figures – while working class people struggle with the crushing cost-of-living crisis and fifteen years of austerity.

And these are the politicians who are now demanding more money for their protection, while at the same time cutting funding to social services and leaving ordinary workers and youth faced with a police force “too overworked to investigate crimes properly” – and that’s when it isn’t the police themselves committing the crimes!

Hatred of politicians is certainly not reserved just to extremists and lone wolves. Across the board amongst the British public, trust in politicians is at an all-time low.

In these conditions, political violence is far from inexplicable. From the murder of politicians in Britain, to the assassination of Brian Thompson in the United States, such acts reflect a boiling over of the disgust and desperate anger countless people feel towards the ruling class, its representatives, and their hypocrisy.

Communists oppose individual violence, because it does not advance the class struggle an inch. But we refuse to join the establishment’s odious chorus of condemnation when the violence of their own system comes back to bite them.
