Since the global crash of 2008 the world has entered into a period of profound and interminable crisis. Everywhere, the economic, political and social situation is characterised by violent convulsions which threaten the entire established order. Recent years have seen the electoral annihilation of mass political parties, the revolutionary overthrow of governments, and the disintegration of entire regions into bloody civil war.
None of the forces unleashed by the crisis of capitalism show any sign of waning. Meanwhile, with another world slump on the horizon and geopolitical tensions rising, even the shocking events of recent years will pale in comparison to what is to come. It is not for nothing that we say this is the most tumultuous period in all of human history.
Our task
Around the world, a political polarisation and radicalisation is taking place as the masses strive for an alternative to the broken status quo. The massive movements around Bernie Sanders in the USA and Jean-Luc Mélenchon in France in the past year are a clear demonstration of this process.
In 1938, Leon Trotsky began his Transitional Programme by asserting that, “The world political situation as a whole is chiefly characterized by a historical crisis of the leadership of the proletariat.” Today, this statement could be repeated word for word without correction.
One hundred years after the Bolshevik Revolution, the world – now more than ever – needs the ideas and revolutionary programme of genuine Marxism. It falls to us to give these ideas flesh and blood – to build the forces of Marxism internationally to make this possibility a reality. We have no time to lose!
Internationalism in action
This summer, Socialist Appeal will be raising funds for the International Marxist Tendency’s international collection, with revolutionary activists from all over the world donating to the vital work of building the forces of Marxism worldwide.
The building of a Marxist International requires hard work and sacrifice, not least in areas which are most exploited and deprived by capitalism. In Pakistan our comrades work in unimaginably difficult conditions, coming up against extreme poverty, corruption at all levels of society and the constant threat of violent attacks by the far-right and fundamentalist organisations. In the face of all of this, the dedication and sacrifice of our comrades is truly inspiring. We should match their dedication by helping to raise money to allow several of our Pakistani comrades to attend the IMT’s World School at the end of July, in order to discuss revolutionary ideas with Marxists from the rest of the world.
At the time of writing, the counter-revolutionary opposition in Venezuela is stepping up its attempts to overthrow President Maduro’s Bolivarian regime by all means, including the use of road blocks, rioting and violent attacks on revolutionary activists. Already, 41 people have lost their lives in the chaos deliberately stoked by the capitalists and imperialists. In this turmoil, our comrades stand steadfastly in defence of the Bolivarian revolution whilst calling for its completion by the expropriation of the reactionary, US-backed oligarchy.
Many revolutionary activists are attracted to our comrades’ message – but without sufficient resources our comrades would not be able to get our ideas to those looking for them. For this reason it is imperative that those who can give as generously as possible in order to support our Bolivarian comrades and assist with the costs of bringing a Venezuelan comrade to the World School. It is no exaggeration to say that even a modest donation can make a difference in these circumstances. Please consider making one today.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, workers have taken to the streets in every one of the country’s 26 states as part of the general strike against the corrupt Temer government. Our comrades have taken part in the strike and demonstrations in many cities and have done exemplary work, putting forward a revolutionary alternative to the crisis and cronyism of Brazilian capitalism. If a sizeable group of these comrades were able to attend the World School in order to share their experiences, it would be a very concrete step forward in the building of the forces of Marxism worldwide. We should consider it our duty as internationalists to give them a hand raising funds for this goal.
These are only a small number of examples of the struggles taking place internationally that comrades from the IMT are involved in – from South Africa and Indonesia, through to Mexico and Morocco. In all of these places, and many more, revolutionary activists rely on the generous donations from our readers and supporters in order to undertake the vital work that they do.

The money raised for the international appeal, however, goes far beyond helping the work of the comrades in different countries. The In Defence of Marxism website has a well-earned reputation for the clarity of its analysis and the quality of its theoretical material. It is an invaluable weapon in our struggle and one which we cannot afford to fall into disrepair. It requires funds to ensure that the website is regularly updated and proofread.
We aim to raise £8,000 over the next couple of months to go towards developing the work of the International Marxist Tendency and to pay for comrades from Pakistan, Venezuela and elsewhere to be able to attend the World School this July. But we can’t do this without your help!
