The second World on Your
Doorstep (WOYD) festival took place in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, over the
weekend of the 19th and 20th July. WOYD is a world music festival, celebrating
the diverse cultures, music and traditions of West Yorkshire and the long
history of migration into the area from all parts of the world.
The West Yorkshire Socialist Appeal supporters helped out at this year’s festival,
collaborating in a labour movement stall which brought together the Labour Representation
Committee, Socialist Appeal, Hands off Venezuela and the Halifax Trades
Council. Funds were raised for both the LRC and Socialist Appeal through
literature sales and donations.
Venezuela generated considerable interest throughout the weekend and a number
of people voiced keen interest in the HoV campaign. A screening of "No
Volveran" is now being planned in the Halifax area as collaboration
between Socialist Appeal, HoV and a new local project.
WOYD was an
enjoyable weekend of fun activities, an effective means of raising the profile
of the Labour left in the region, and increasingthe awareness of the Venezuelan revolution. Socialist
Appeal supporters are now seeking to build on this success in the local community
and expand the HoV campaign across West Yorkshire.
