As another turbulent year comes to an end, we appeal to our supporters to help us build the forces of Marxism in Britain, by contributing to our campaign to purchase a new office. Invest in this revolutionary cause – make a donation today!
What a year it has been. Marx once remarked that there are some uneventful periods in which decades pass as though they were only days. There are other times, he noted, however, in which years of experience can be concentrated in the space of just one week.
The epoch we are living through is clearly akin to the latter. In the space of just a few months, for example, Britain has had a new monarch and two new prime ministers. And lest we forget, between the downfall of Boris Johnson and the coronation of Rishi Sunak was the ill-fated premiership of Liz Truss, who lost her infamous contest to outlast an iceberg lettuce.
All of this demonstrates the accelerating pace of events, which is, in turn, a reflection of the instability that is wracking society at all levels – economically, socially, and politically.
Masses on the move
Back in January, with the pandemic receding into the background, the ruling class hubristically believed that we would be well into a new ‘roaring twenties’ by now. Instead, 2022 will go down in history as yet another turning point in capitalism’s deepening crisis, with war, inflation, and recession all stalking the land.
The last twelve months will also be remembered, however, for all the enormous class struggles that have erupted across the world. From Sri Lanka to Iran: the masses on the move in all countries.
The world economy is in turmoil, class struggle is on the rise, and workers and youth are turning to revolutionary ideas.
Socialist Appeal is building an organisation capable of placing Marxist ideas at the head of the labour movement.

In Britain, an inspiring strike wave has arisen, with the mighty giant of the working class beginning to wake up and flex its muscles. Rail workers, posties, dockers, bus drivers, barristers, lecturers, nurses, civil servants: all of these, and more, are mobilising and taking action against the Tories and the bosses.
And all of these strikes, struggles, and mass movements are clearly only a prelude to further titanic events in 2023 and the years to follow. There has never been a better time to be a revolutionary.
Foundations for growth
At the same time, the Marxist tendency in Britain has taken an enormous step forward over the past year, thanks to your support and the sacrifice of our comrades.
Not only have we continued to build our forces, quantitatively and qualitatively, but we have also been laying the foundations for an even greater period of growth in the months and years ahead.
Since April, Socialist Appeal has been running a campaign to raise the necessary funds to purchase our very own office space. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our supporters, we are now within touching distance of our £200,000 total target.
We would therefore like to make a final appeal to our readers, as the end of the year approaches: please donate whatever you can – large or small – to help us reach our goal, so that we can take this huge leap forward for the Marxist tendency in Britain.
Revolutionary sacrifice
And thank you so much to everyone who has contributed so far! We are blown away by the commitment and sacrifice that our readers and supporters have shown towards this financial campaign.
So far, we have received £191,750 in donations and pledges. This leaves just £8,250 to go. It is time for one last push!
Even relatively modest donations could add up to make this difference. 165 donations of £50, for example, would be enough to take us over our target.
Being able to take this important step will make a massive difference in our ability to make an impact on the revolutionary events that are unfolding in front of us, in Britain and internationally.
The working class is on the move. We must build the forces of Marxism – amongst the youth and in the workers’ movement – with a sense of urgency.
With British capitalism being rocked by crises and instability, the strength of our finances, and the security provided by having our office, will determine how effectively we can campaign and intervene; and how fast we can expand over the coming years, in order to meet the historic challenges and tasks in front of us.
- Forward to a new office!
- Forward to a mass Marxist tendency!
- Forward to the socialist revolution!
