Trump is visiting the UK this week for the latest NATO summit. He and Boris Johnson are cut from the same capitalist cloth, seeking to line the pockets of big business. We must mobilise and fight the Boris-Trump alliance.
Billionaire creep Donald Trump is visiting London on 3-4 December. Whilst his buddies Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage will be welcoming him with open arms, workers and youth are mobilising to show that Trump is not welcome here.
Warmongers
The US President is visiting London for a NATO summit – marking the 70th year since its foundation. NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) is a military alliance of the major Western imperialist powers. Its purpose: to back up the imperialist interests of the capitalists – above all those of US capitalism.
The Queen will be hosting Trump and NATO leaders, as they congratulate themselves on their alliance. But whilst shaking hands for the media in public, this gang of warmongers are likely to be at each other’s throats in private. With capitalism in crisis, and austerity on the order of the day, none of them can agree on who should foot the ever-increasing military bill.
One thing is for certain – that Trump is in London to demand that all other countries cough-up, Britain included. Trump has long complained that most NATO members are “delinquent” in meeting their military spending target of 2% of GDP. Trump even says that this should be massively increased to between 4-5%.
If achieved, this would see hundreds of billions of dollars funnelled into the pockets of US military company shareholders. And, of course, the bill for this will not be paid by the richest in society, but by the working class. It is our living standards that will come under attack to bolster the profits of the super-rich and their war machine.
Special relationship
No doubt Boris Johnson will fall into line with Trump’s demands. Coming from the same billionaire elite, Johnson’s agenda is fundamentally the same as Trump’s: to make the working class pay for the crisis of capitalism. As Trump himself remarked of Johnson: “He’s a good man, he’s tough and he’s smart. They call him ‘Britain Trump’ [sic].”
Trump knows that Johnson is in no position to upset the so-called ‘special relationship’ between Britain and America – a relationship that, if Johnson wins the general election, will get even more ‘special’!
Johnson makes a lot of noise about a prosperous ‘independent Britain’ after Brexit. But the reality is that, on the basis of capitalism, no country is independent from the demands of the world market. And with American capitalism the most powerful force in this market, post-Brexit Tory Britain will be at the mercy of US imperialism. This is why the Tories under Johnson have been undertaking secret negotiations to open up the NHS to US big business.
For all these reasons, the fight against Trump must be seen as a fight against Johnson – and a fight for a Corbyn-led Labour government, to kick out Boris and his Tory chums.
Johnson, Farage, and Trump are all cut from the same capitalist cloth. To smash Trump’s billionaire alliance, we must organise to smash the rotten capitalist system that breeds these reactionary creatures.
