It has now been confirmed that Jerry Hicks is on the ballot paper for UNITE general secretary. With over a quarter of the nominating period to go, he has already secured more than the required nominations to be able to declare that he will be a candidate in the coming election, gaining support from every region and sector of the union.
There is everything to win. Nominations have been secured from Shetland to Swansea, Carlow to Cambridge, and all points between. Support has been coming from every region and every sector. In fact Jerry has received more branch nominations this time round than he had received in the last general secretary campaign in Amicus, where he came second in the ballot. This is a fantastic achievement and down to the huge amount of work by so many people. Nevertheless, we urge all supporters to seek out as many nominations as possible as these will be displayed on the ballot papers
.
The last day for nominations is 31st August. To receive a workplace nomination form you will need to contact your Region Secretary, who will post one to you. Members must be given at least seven days notice of a nominating meeting. The result must then be sent to the Electoral Reform Society by 5th September.
The ballot of members will be from the 25th October to 19th November 2010.
Jerry having come second in the election for joint general secretary in the Amicus section of Unite (one million members) less than 18 months ago is thought by many to have a very good chance of winning this election in the whole union.
