47 percent of young people think that “the entire way our society is organised must be radically changed through revolution”, according to a poll commissioned by Channel 4.
The study, set to be published in its entirety this Thursday, also found that there is a deep rejection of parliamentary democracy by a majority of ‘Generation Z’.
Authoritarianism?
52 percent of those aged 13-27 said that “the UK would be a better place if a strong leader was in charge who does not have to bother with parliament and elections”.
Of course, it is the latter statistic that the liberal rags are focussing on – in a very hysterical manner, it must be said.
One Metro article ‘Gen Z ‘ready to embrace dictatorship in Britain after losing trust in democracy’ – published alongside images of Kim Jong-Un, Aleksandr Lukashenko, and Taliban gunmen (!) – argued that these results “should concern us all”.
Another piece by The Times said that these findings are “deeply concerning” and reveal an “acceptance of authoritarianism” amongst the youth of Britain.
Clearly, the establishment is spooked. But these ladies and gentlemen are utterly incapable of understanding what lies behind these statistics.
The CEO of Channel 4 claimed that this radicalisation is down to the fact that “Gen Z curate their own understanding of ‘the truth’ [note the quotation marks around ‘truth’, by the way]” using social media.
What patronising nonsense! We aren’t “curating” any truth at all. The objective truth is that our generation has grown up knowing nothing but a system in crisis and turmoil.
‘Democracy’
This ‘democracy’ that the ruling class speaks of – has it put more food on the table? Has it meant our parents struggle less with money? Has it made our rent cheaper? Has it made our education better? Has it even begun to address the climate catastrophe?
For our entire lives, ‘democracy’ has meant little more than attacks on living standards and our rights here in Britain, and imperialist bloodshed abroad.
And in return, when we turn 18, we are given the sacrosanct privilege of voting for one of two main parties – Labour or Tory – who stand for exactly the same system of privilege and exploitation.
Under this so-called ‘democracy’, we are made to feel small and powerless. So is it any wonder that young people are disillusioned and cynical about the current system? What has it done for them?
Everyone can see that we live in a democracy for the rich – for the billionaires and oligarchs who profit from our suffering. It is a democracy for the slaveholders, to paraphrase Lenin.

Generation Revolution
Only a fool would believe that a majority of young people are yearning for a right-wing dictatorship, along the lines of Mussolini or Hitler.
In fact, a 2024 YouGov poll revealed that more than four times as many Britons prefer communism over fascism than the other way around. And a 2023 poll from the Fraser Institute found that 29 percent of 18-24 year olds think that communism is the “ideal economic system”.
Perhaps if the survey had included a question about workers’ democracy instead of a loaded question about ‘strong leaders’, there’d be a little less confusion in Britain’s newsrooms today.
But what this poll does nonetheless reveal is that people are clearly fed up and want fundamental change – something that they know the current system of bourgeois democracy cannot deliver.
Behind this supposed preference for a “strong leader” lies a deep desire for thorough and uncompromising change, and a force which is willing to sweep aside all obstacles to carry it out.
That is precisely the force that we are trying to build at the Revolutionary Communist Party. We want to overthrow the oligarchs and put ordinary people in charge, and we’ll stop at nothing to get this done.
Beneath the surface, there are strong undercurrents of class anger and polarisation forming. This poll has shone a flashlight into the depths. But soon the waves of revolution will crash upon these shores, for all to see.
