We would like to reach out to all our comrades and readers with an appeal to donate towards our annual Fighting Fund collection, which will be held at our Socialist Appeal supporters’ conference on the weekend of 12-14 March.
Our Fighting Fund plays an essential role in the building of the Marxist tendency. It allows us to look forward; to invest in the future of the organisation; and to support the incredible work of our comrades internationally.
Preparing for revolution
This year, we will meet amidst the deepest crisis that capitalism – and perhaps humanity – has ever known.
The waste, corruption, and callousness of the capitalist system has been exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in more than two million deaths globally so far.
Society is wracked with instability at all levels. The deep slump triggered by the coronavirus crisis has brought mass unemployment back to the so-called advanced capitalist countries. Meanwhile, the accumulated rage within society threatens to explode to the surface at any moment.
The system is at a complete impasse. Even the strategists of capital lament the ineptitude of their own leaders and warn of revolution.
In the coming battles, a mass revolutionary movement will be forged. But we cannot afford to wait for this perspective to sweep us off our feet. We must be ready.
Growth and goals
It is with this in mind that we have set our sights on this year’s collection. We hope to raise at least £60,000 by April.
This money will go a long way towards achieving two goals that we cannot afford to put off. One is renting more office space for Socialist Appeal. The expansion of our full-time apparatus, in line with the growing support for our ideas, has rendered our current office completely unsuitable for our size.
It is vital for our work to have our full-time staff working together in a suitable office environment. We have therefore resolved to rent a larger space, come what may. But this will involve a total expenditure of £40,000 this year. We must raise this sum as soon as we can.
Internationalism
Our second goal is to donate at least £42,500 to the collection of the International Marxist Tendency, taking place this summer.
Our comrades in countries like Pakistan and Russia face the threat of imprisonment or worse, as they strive to build the forces of Marxism. And yet they can be found at the forefront of the mass movements developing against their corrupt ruling classes.
In Russia, for example, there is just one full-timer, whose efforts to coordinate and support the work of comrades across the largest country on Earth are nothing short of heroic.
We must find a way to match the weight of their sacrifice. In Britain, we are not required to face the same risks confronted by our comrades elsewhere. But what we can do – and what our revolutionary duty demands of us – is draw upon our greater financial resources, in order to provide whatever support our comrades need.
