Trump’s UK visit this week will draw thousands onto the streets in opposition to his disgusting policies. But many of these are just a crude continuation of his liberal predecessors.
Donald Trump is rightly vilified by most of the media in the UK for his abhorrent views and actions towards women, immigrants, and those fighting for racial justice.
But as thousands prepare to take to the street tomorrow for the US President’s visit, it is worth asking: is Donald Trump actually an aberration? In other words: is he really that different from previous presidents?
Trump is presented in stark contrast to his predecessor, Barack Obama and his 2016 Democratic challenger for the presidency, Hillary Clinton.
During his first year as president, Obama was awarded the Nobel prize for peace in a frenzy of expectation. By comparison, the international response to Trump’s first year was one of horror – especially over his policies and comments on immigration and his infamous proposed wall.
But continuous fawning over Obama’s presidency has led to a partial whitewashing of recent history. Obama was no friend to immigrants. In his eight years in the Oval Office, he oversaw more deportations of “illegal aliens” than any previous president, deporting 2.5 million people.
Obama and Clinton, as Secretary of State, also presided over the continuation of the Bush doctrine on foreign policy. They actively supported the extrajudicial murder of American citizens by creating a kill list in 2010, which was then acted out in the following years.
The defense, continuation and cover-up of Bush’s torture programme and the expansion of drone killings into Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, Libya, Mali and Niger by Obama and Clinton, were inconvenient truths for the liberal media.
The same establishment mouthpieces, in turn, have been left scratching their heads as to why Trump’s isolationist foreign policy promise – to stop interfering in other countries’ affairs – has resonated with so many.
Trump’s immigration policy has led to families with young children being torn apart. In response, the Democrats have attempted to gain a political advantage, for example by posting photos of children in cages with nothing to sleep on. Sadly for the Democrats, however, one of the photos in question was taken in 2014 – under the Obama administration!
The liberal establishment and their representatives are crying rivers of crocodile tears for the victims of Trump’s policies. In so doing, they hope to make political capital out of Trump’s crimes. But there is only one snag with their strategy: it rests on our memories being so short that we have forgotten all of their same crimes from only yesterday.
