In this recording from the IMT Winter School 2013 “Marx was right!”, Marie Frederiksen of the Danish Marxist paper Socialistisk Standpunkt discusses the questions of women’s oppression and liberation, and provides a Marxist analyses of the women’s question and the feminist movement.

In the opening session of this year’s International Marxist Tendency Winter School, entitled “Marx was right”, Jorge Martin – editor of America Socialista, the Spanish language magazine of the IMT – discusses the current crisis of capitalism and analyses the revolutionary movements that have broken out across the globe as a result.

We here publish the video footage of the debate between Alan Woods – editor of www.marxist.com and author of “Bolshevism: the Road to Revolution” – and Orlando Figes – Professor of History at Birkbeck University and author of “A People’s Tragedy” – on the true nature of the Russian Revolution, and what it meant for the people of Russia and the class struggle internationally.

Over 70 attended the freshers’ week meeting of the UCLU Marxists, where Fred Weston – editor of www.marxist.com – spoke on the topic “What is Capitalism? What is Socialism?”, analysing why there is crisis today, and outlining the potential alternative under a socialist society.

One of the great classics of Marxism is the book by Frederick Engels entitled “The Origins of the Family, Private Property and the State”. In this book Engels applies the Marxist method of historical materialism to the earliest periods of pre-history to analyse the past and uncover the origins of the institutions we see today. Rob Sewell, editor of Socialist Appeal, gives an introduction to the book and explains how class society came into existence.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was the greatest event in history. And yet, within a decade, the revolution had degenerated and given birth to the monsterous bureaucracy of Stalinism. In this talk from the Marxist summer school in June 2013, Alan Woods – author of “Bolshevism: the road to revolution” – outlines the history of Russia, from the October revolution to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Speaking at the Marxist summer school in July 2013, Daniel Morley outlines the main tenets of Marxist philosophy – the laws of dialectical materialism – and discusses how these relate to nature and society, thus providing us with a set of analytical tools for understanding the world.

At this year’s Marxist summer school, Adam Booth introduced a discussion on “Marxism, Keynesianism, and the postwar boom”. In his talk, Adam explains the factors behind the long period of economic growth seen after the Second World War and examines the contrasting economic theories of Marxism and Keynesianism in relation to the postwar period and to today’s crisis.

At the recent 2013 World School of the International Marxist Tendency, Alan Woods introduced the discussion on perspectives for world revolution. Alan talked about the lightning speed at which events – like the mass movements in Turkey and Brazil or the second Egyption revolution – are taking place. Due to the global nature of the crisis of capitalism, similar events will happen in every country on the planet.
