A Unison-led demonstration was held outside King’s College London on Friday 1st December as part of an on-going campaign to bring the university’s cleaning staff in-house. Around 100 staff and students were present, demanding justice for the cleaners. Joe Attard of the KCL Marxists reports on the latest events in the cleaners’ fight for decent pay and conditions.
SOAS Marxist students report from the protest earlier this week called by the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) University of London branch in support of bringing outsourced workers at the Senate House back in-house.
Earlier this month, Corbyn’s Labour Party tabled a motion to lower the voting age to 16. Unsurprisingly, the Tories (who have almost no support amongst teenagers) opposed this. Thousands of students marched through central London today to demand “free education now”. With Corbyn promising to abolish fees, and with the current Tory government in crisis, the prospect of free education has become a tangible possibility within our generation’s reach.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 15 November, there will be a demonstration in London calling for free education. Marxist Students will be there and we hope as many people as possible will be able to come along too. We want to see free education, full living grants for all students, and an end to education cuts.
This academic year will see elections taking place in campuses across the country for new student union officers and delegates to the NUS conference in April 2018. We publish here the Marxist Student Federation’s manifesto for the student movement, which outlines the socialist policies and fighting programme that we will be demanding in these campaigns.
Marxist students in London began the academic year last Saturday with a revolutionary walking tour of the city, retracing the steps where Marx and Engels used to live, write, and gather to organise the fledgling communist movement.
