Last Saturday, 11th February, around 100 students and young workers from at least 20 schools, colleges, and universities across the country gathered in London for the annual national conference of the Marxist Student Federation. The number of attendees was a fitting figure to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.
Nearly 3,000 members of the British Airways “mixed fleet” cabin crews have walked out as part of a six-day strike aimed at fighting what their union rightly describes as poverty pay. Unless a deal is reached, a fresh four-day strike will begin on 17th February. However, British Airways (BA) bosses are digging their heels in and refusing to negotiate.

The resignation of Clive Lewis from the Labour front bench has dealt yet another blow to Corbyn’s leadership, as Brexit continues to torment the Labour Party. The public resignation of one of Corbyn’s most well known supporters may prove to be a fatal blow for the Labour leader, as the party is torn apart amidst a crisis of social democracy.
With Brexit, May and the Tories tell us, we have “taken back control”. But the Prime Minister’s subservient behaviour towards the odious Donald Trump recently demonstrates that, far from gaining sovereignty and independence by leaving the EU, British capitalism and the British Establishment have become even more reliant on their big brother across the pond.
Following the inspiring and semi-spontaneous protests last Monday, around 50,000 demonstrators descended onto the streets of London again on Saturday 4th February to say: No to Trump! No to the Muslim Ban! Solidarity with migrants and refugees! The task now is to build a mass political movement against Trump and the Tories.
RMT members on the London Underground have won significant concessions as a result of their militant strike action in defence of jobs. But all of these gains, as this London Socialist Appeal supporter comments, have been achieved without the help or support of the Labour Mayor, Sadiq Khan.
In the last week, after months of strike action on Southern rail against job cuts and threats to health and safety, ASLEF union leaders and Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) management reached an “agreement” to end the dispute, with the support of the TUC. If this deal is accepted, it will represent a harsh defeat for railway workers.

Every action provokes an equal and opposite reaction. This fundamental law of physics was vividly displayed across the UK last night, as tens of thousands of youth took to the streets in cities across the country to protest against Donald Trump’s #MuslimBan and the complicity of the subservient Tory government.
In just a few days, Trump has set his stamp on US and world politics, economics, and relations. Already, his Islamophobic, anti-immigrant policies – in particular – have sparked mass protests across America and internationally. This is what is meant when we talk of sharp and sudden changes being on the order of the day.
