A row over an alleged Downing Street Christmas party held during lockdown has added further fuel to the fire for Boris Johnson and his scandal-ridden government. The labour movement must mobilise to kick out these crooks and charlatans.

Brexiteer bluster and the UK’s humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan have exposed the deluded fantasies of jingoistic Tories and the weaknesses of British imperialism. The ruling class is increasingly impotent and losing control.

As crises mount, the government is increasingly leaning on the army in order to fill labour shortages and keep society running – from driving lorries to providing jabs. This is yet another reflection of the decrepit state of British capitalism.

As the crisis of capitalism deepens, Boris Johnson’s government is being thrown from pillar to post, with inflation rising, endless scandals emerging, and a new wave of the pandemic looming. Only the struggle for socialism can offer a way forward.

Private water companies are routinely dumping raw sewage into Britain’s waterways and coasts. But the Tories claim that fixing this would bankrupt these firms. Clearly the whole system is bankrupt. It’s time to re-nationalise the lot.
