Socialist Appeal activists have been celebrating our organisation’s 30th birthday this month with enthusiastic stalls and sales in cities and towns across the country. Join us in the struggle for socialism, and help to #BuildTheMarxistPress.
This month marks 30 years since the founding of Socialist Appeal. In celebration of this landmark, hundreds of Socialist Appeal activists have been enthusiastically hitting the streets in recent weeks, selling our newspaper at almost 60 different locations across the country over the Easter Weekend.
From Bristol to Birmingham; from Newcastle to Falmouth – and plenty in between: our stalls have been stocked with a variety of books, pamphlets, and magazines covering Marxist theory, working class history, and pertinent issues facing workers and youth today.
At these sales, Socialist Appeal activists spoke with passers-by about the cost-of-living crisis, the war in Ukraine, and how Marxism is more relevant today than ever. And even better, many people we chatted with expressed a keen desire to get involved in the fight for socialism.
One bus driver in North London, for example, stopped his bus in the middle of the street and asked for a copy of our newspaper, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Another activist approached bin workers about a local strike. After a short discussion, they eagerly took our material, and the next week they approached activists again asking for more!
Growing interest in the ideas of Marxism should come as no surprise. The brazen corruption of the Tories, the disastrous COVID pandemic, the cost-of-living catastrophe, and scandalous profiteering by cut-throat capitalists: all of this has led people to draw radical conclusions.
What alternative is there, other than to channel this anger and discontent into overthrowing these capitalist gangsters and fighting for the socialist transformation of society?

Guide to action
Far from simply being a newspaper, we are an organisation based on the defence of genuine revolutionary Marxist ideas. Since our founding, the objective situation has been transformed, further vindicating these ideas.
Marxism, far from being a rigid, lifeless dogma, is a guide to action. It arms workers and the youth with the ideas to lift themselves out of the barbarism of capitalism and build a society based on need – not profit.
British capitalism is in deep crisis, and cracks are appearing in every pillar of the establishment: the Tories, the British monarchy, the police, etc. But this rotten collection of crooks and exploiters will hang on for dear life.
The need to build a revolutionary organisation capable of playing a decisive role in the coming period, therefore, is an urgent task.
After all, as Leon Trotsky remarked, a revolutionary situation without the necessary revolutionary leadership is like a “knife without a blade”.

Office appeal
We must not rest on our laurels. Our most important years are still ahead of us. We are in a new period. And we must proceed on stable foundations. Whilst the objective situation has been transformed, so too must our organisation to match the pace and scale of events.
We have undergone such amazing growth in the last year, that we have almost outgrown our current office. We cannot afford to stay still and remain where we are.
For that reason, we are marking our 30th year with a campaign to purchase our own office space, with room in which to continue to expand.
We are therefore issuing this appeal – to all our readers and supporters; to all of our comrades and friends – to help us meet our bold target of £200,000, for this special office collection!
Having our own office space will bring priceless benefits to the building of the tendency. All of the generous donations that our friends and supporters make require sacrifice and commitment.
As things stand, much of that sacrifice ends up in the pocket of a landlord. But if this campaign is successful, then all future donations will contribute to strengthening the financial resources of the Marxist tendency.
The tremors of colossal revolutionary events have already begun across the world. We are confident that with stable foundations, the revolutionary organisation can withstand these tremors, and rise to the occasion.
Please help us in this important task by digging deep and donating what you can. Forward to a permanent office! And forward to the socialist revolution, when we can abolish these profiteering landlords for good!
