In Blackpool over the May Day Bank holiday, the British shop workers’
union USDAW, representing some 330,000 workers, passed a resolution
unanimously supporting the Venezuelan Revolution and affiliating to the
Hands Off Venezuela Campaign. The resolution was supported by the
Executive Committee which recommended it to the ADM.
The
resolution was submitted by the Nursling Industrial H63 branch. “The
Venezuelan Government has utilised the country's wealth and resources
to benefit working people, the poor and the landless”, states the
resolution. “A referendum gave President Hugo Chavez an overwhelming
victory and a strengthened democratic mandate.”
USDAW
conference went on to deplore “recent statements of the US
administration and its attempts to intervene in the internal life of
Venezuela and agrees to raise these concerns with our Government.”
The
motion highlighted the fact that the Hands Off Venezuela Campaign “has
gained the support and affiliation from organisations representing
millions of trade union members.” It then called upon the union
nationally to affiliate to the Hands Off Venezuela Campaign.
