Attacks on Labour expose Tory weakness

With less than 18 months until the next General Election, the past few months have seen the Tories step up their campaign against their main opposition, with a barrage of attacks on those associated with the Labour Party – primarily Unite the Union and the Co-Op Party. But with the Conservatives leading a coalition that is presiding over falling living standards, and which is rightly seen as supporting the bankers and fat-cat energy companies, it seems that the mud being slung by the Tories will not so easily stick.

With wages stagnating at an average of 8% lower than what they were in 2008, and with the costs of food, heating, transport and other basic necessities rising, one million people in the UK are this year expected to be using payday loans to cover the costs of the festive period. London Young Labour 2013 conference: more politics please!

A recently joined member of the Labour Party reports on the London Young Labour 2013 conference that took place on the first weekend of December. Frequently during the weekend, guest speakers addressed the attendees as ‘the future of Britain’, which put to the test the political level of the conference. However, leading London Young Labour members mainly used the day to run a series of caucuses and workshops, which gave little room for discussing wider political questions.

Thousands demonstrate for “Cops off Campus”: time to build for mass student-worker action; time to fight for socialist policies!

The streets of London were filled yesterday – Wednesday 11th December – with thousands of students angry against the presence of police on university campuses and the increasingly violent use of force by the police against student protests. The stage is now set to build for mass national action between students and university workers next year.

We publish here a statement by the Sussex Marxist Society on recent events at Sussex University, where five students have been suspended following their participation in an occupation and picket line activity at the strike of university staff on 3rd December. Mandela memorial: Booing crowd embarrasses Zuma, frightens the bourgeoisie

The Nelson Mandela national memorial day turned out horribly wrong for the bourgeoisie, the ANC, and President Jacob Zuma as the masses completely upset the applecart and took center-stage.  The result was a massive embarrassment for the “respectable people” who had come from all over the world, and especially for President Zuma, who was booed amidst an outpouring of raw emotion by the defiant proletarian crowd.

Anti-capitalist offensive delivers Bolivarian victory in Venezuelan municipal elections

The December 8th municipal elections in Venezuela gave yet another victory to the Bolivarian revolution, with the Socialist United Party (PSUV) and its allies receiving 5.1 million votes (49.24% of the total) and 4.4 million (42.72%) going to the opposition. The opposition had presented these elections as a plebiscite on Maduro’s presidency; the result, however, will serve to vindicate the decision taken by Maduro’s to fight against the economic sabotage led by the capitalists.
